Home Care for People with Diabetes

Diabetes, which is a metabolic disease occurs with an increase of high blood sugar levels over an extended period. Frequent urination, increased hunger and thirst are some symptoms of high blood sugar. If left untreated, diabetes can cause numerous acute and long-term complications.

Acute and Long-term complications

  • Acute – nonketoic hyperosmolar coma and diabetic ketoacidosis
  • Long-Term – Cardiovascular disease, stroke, foot ulcers, damage to the eyes and kidney failure

3 Different Types of Diabetes

  • Type 1 DM – Occurs when insulin production in body is not enough. The cause of this type is unknown.
  • Type 2 DM – Occurs when cells fail to respond to insulin properly. The primary cause of this is excessive body weight and not enough exercise.
  • Gestational diabetes – Occurs during pregnancy when pregnant women without a previous history of diabetes develop a high blood glucose level.
